Selkirk – Scotlands First Plastic Bag Free Town

April 24, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Its great to see that on the 4th April 2008 Selkirk became the first Scottish town to go plastic bag free.

With a population of 6,000 and approximately 102 shops and businesses the aim is not to replace plastic bags but to find sustainable and more ecologically friendly alternatives.

Funds were raised to buy recycled, fairtrade shopping bags to give away to shoppers and they encourage shops to use paper or cornstarch bags for food, meat and fish, with the cornstarch bags then being able to be composted.

Visit their website which also displays the lovely designs from a school poster competition.
